The Only Cover Letter Formula That Actually Gets Read

If your cover letter starts with 'I am writing to apply for the position of...' — stop. That's a coffin. Recruiters read the first line, know it's boilerplate, and skim the rest for keywords they've already seen on your resume.

Here's the 4-paragraph formula we build into every CareerRaze output. Steal it.

Paragraph 1 — The hook (2 sentences max)

Open with a specific reason you're the right person, tied to something the company actually cares about. No 'I am writing.' No 'I saw your listing.' Get to the point.

'You're scaling GTM into three new regions this year. I've done exactly that at two prior companies, and I've got the playbook that shortens ramp time by 40%.'

Paragraph 2 — The proof (3-4 sentences)

One or two specific wins from your resume, told with numbers. Not a list — a story. Show, don't summarize. This is where you make them go 'oh, this person can actually do the thing.'

Paragraph 3 — The fit (2-3 sentences)

Show you understand THEIR business, not just yours. Mention something specific — a product, a recent announcement, a strategic bet — and tie your skill directly to advancing it. This is the paragraph that separates you from 95% of applicants who never bothered to read the company page.

Paragraph 4 — The close (2 sentences)

Confident, direct, no groveling. End with a clear ask — a call, not a plea.

'Happy to walk you through the specific approach on a 15-minute call this week. Which day works?'

What to cut

  • 'I am writing to apply for...' — everyone knows why you're writing.
  • 'I believe I would be a great fit because...' — show, don't hedge.
  • 'I have attached my resume for your review.' — they know.
  • 'Thank you for your consideration.' — replace with confidence.

A great cover letter reads like a confident 30-second pitch. Four paragraphs, under 250 words, ends with a real ask. That's it.
